A crown is one of the most common types of dental restorations as it can address decayed, broken, weak or worn-down teeth; sometimes, however, a cap can become a dental emergency. So what are the telltale signs that this dental restoration requires immediate attention or has become an emergency?
Do I Have a Crown Emergency?
If you experience any of the following, you need immediate dental attention:
- A loose crown
- A bad smell or taste in your mouth
- Your tongue feels a sharp edge from the restoration
- There’s pain underneath the cap
- Decay is present underneath the restoration
- The crown is chipped or broken
How We Assess the Restoration
Dr Lindsay Chen (Dentist) will perform an evaluation that includes the following:
History
She will ask about your dental history, particularly the history of your cap. We will want to know your symptoms (e.g., pain, sensitivity, bleeding of the gum, and looseness of the restoration).
Examination
Next, Dr Chen will examine the cap’s stability and the following:
- The clearance of the crown margin – any decay under the margin
- The condition of the gingiva around the cap – any inflammation or infection of the gingiva around the restoration
Periapical radiography will then be taken to assess if there is any root pathology, such as root radiolucency. Then based on the symptoms, examination, and X-ray, our dentist will provide an initial diagnosis, followed by a solution to treat the problematic cap.
Taking Care of Your New Restoration
After receiving your new crown, Dr Chen will give oral hygiene instructions for you to look after your new cap. She recommends not drinking or eating right after the restoration before the numbness wears off. It’s also important to avoid eating hard or sticky food.
To avoid a future cap emergency, you can take some preventative steps. These include having good oral hygiene habits such as brushing teeth twice daily and flossing thoroughly daily to ensure the crown margin is cleaned well.
